Yesterday I watched the Seattle Bowl, oh that’s right, the Super Bowl.
I didn’t know much about either team, so I watched some of the pre-game press I wanted to get a sense for the heart of the teams. I happened to catch a piece of the interview they did with the Seahawks quarterback, and was pleasantly surprised. He said his dad used to ask him a simple question, “Son, Why Not You?”.
Hmm, great question dad!
As the team won, it became very clear just how powerful those three words really were, not just on Wilson, but on his entire team because many of them shared those same three words.
That message, that Wilson heard from his father all his life was a gentle push toward the possible. A quiet reminder, that something greater is ALWAYS possible.
Now it’s the day after the Super bowl, and I won’t be a Monday morning quarterback. That would be too easy to do, but it won’t get me or you a Super bowl ring. It will always be easier to watch other people make their dreams come true. Talking about the successes and failures of others has become somewhat of a national pass time. If they win, it’s great, and if they fail, it becomes front page news.
The only thing about that is Life is not, nor will it ever be a spectator sport. You don’t grow or get any better by thinking, or wishing, you get better by doing.
You maybe thinking failure can be embarrassing, and you would be right at least in the beginning stages, but how embarrassing would it be to fail your way to a win. That fear that sometimes feels paralyzing is an indication that you are moving in the right direction. So what are you waiting ?
Let me be clear my friend today, I am here with a reminder. YOU were made for the big leagues. You were made to do more than sit on the sidelines. That safe life you are enjoying, can be both predictable and comfortable, and that is okay, but are you REALLY living the life you were meant to live?
This morning, as you read this “reminder” I hope you think about what makes you smile. I hope you take a closer look at all that talent that is inside of you. I hope you evaluate that dream just a little bit further, and are willing to go a little deeper. Life is not easy for anyone. You will have bumps and bruises along the way and that is what teaches us and helps us grow. Every courageous person, who walks away from comfort and strives toward something better does it at a cost.
You may be thinking well, “How do I know it will work?” and “What if I don’t make it?”, but a better question is what if you fail because you never tried. There are no guarantees that anything will work. There is no guarantee that your job will be their tomorrow, or that your company you work or the job you do will still be around in a year. Don’t hold on to your security blanket thinking that things will never change, because they will, but you can choose to change right along with it.
Today look at your life, and ask yourself the same question Russell Wilson’s dad asked him… Why NOT YOU! Then make today the day you decide it will be!
