Developing Beyond You Leadership Requires a different attitude.
Your are doing leadership well when you really understand the people you serve. You can’t just say you understand, you really do have to understand. You need to know what keeps them up at night, you have to understand how they look at you and what they need.
As a leader, you have to do less talking and more listening, and you have to understand what is happening in their lives.
The people you lead are opening a door of trust for you, but you have to earn it.
Here are just a few of the takeaways from Dr. Henry McCloud’s presentation at #Leadercast2014.
As we look at Beyond you leadership, here are somethings that you have to consider.
1. You are doing well in leadership when your people know that you get them. The people you serve has to know and understand that you get them, that you understand what they are experiencing and you know the problems that are doing on in their heads.
2. Where is your heart? When you have a passion for what you do, you have the ability to make a difference because you are doing it for the love and not just for the results. People are inspired and you bring that along when you have that kind of passion. you invigorate them, and you inspire them. They see through your eyes.
3. Leaders who have influence that goes past themselves are leaders that can give up what is the hardest for others to give up, CONTROL! You have to give to be willing to give up control to others. Then you need to let them know that they have enough control to make a change.
You need to let people know what they have control over that they can control that will help them make the results possible.
Know what you can control…know that you can move your own mountains if you are willing to do your part of the work.
Know what you need to win. Know what you have control over everyday has a result. In the ways that they are engaged you have to give them the control and you have to connect them to the result.
Create environment where people can win, and where winning is possible.
Let people know that they have the ability to drive the results.
Lastly, leaders have strengths that people follow. Your people have got to feel like you would do anything for them.
You need to let people know that you are willing to do whatever it takes. People want to know that they have in you someone who is willing to fight for them, have their back and someone who can change them around.
You are a great leader, here is how you can show your people, and take them along this leadership journey with you.
