On December 2nd, Mary J. Blige will release her new album and here is my first look at her new work, and her new sound.

This album was made in 3 weeks, while Mary was in London. New names, a new sound and the voice and talent we have grown to love. The London Session is full of heartfelt ballads, although there are still some fast paced songs for those of us who love Mary’s ability to keep us taping our feet and dancing.

Mary’s unique sound doesn’t disappoint. She still delivers the emotional lyrics we are used to hearing from her, but they are mixed with rich sultry sounds.

I didn’t know what to expect from this new album.

 

Therapy, one of the first releases seemed like a big change from Mary’s previous material, but the albums other sounds really grew on me. I loved the fast songs on the album as soon as I heard them, and I felt the same about Not Loving You, a warm ballad about loving someone who needs to learn to love themselves. When Your Gone, a ballad about Right Now and My Loving. Some of the other tracks had to grow on me, but they were still good, just not quite what I was expecting from Mary.

This is a deviation from some of Mary’s other material, but that doesn’t take away from this record. If you love Mary, you are going to love this album, and if you haven’t listened to her music in a while, I think you will be pleasantly surprised by what you hear.

On this album, she introduces the sound and feeling of London, and I think for her it was a good choice.
