Luke 19:40, “I tell you that if these should keep silent, the stones would immediately cry out.”
I was preparing for my son’s science co-op. He’s in the midst of a mini-Geology unit and I was assigned that week to help with the labs.
Fortunately, I had it covered. I was going to use that coveted Geology degree I had earned so many years ago.
In excitement, I ran to get my books. Thoughts of landforms, crystal formations, and plate tectonics filled my head. Oh! So much to talk about! So much information I wanted to pass along — but oh! Such little time.
I cracked open my ancient lab books and was speechless……2nd degree prisms, pinacoids, geomorphology, rock columns, topography and so on and so forth.
Geology Curriculum Galore!
It was awe inspiring!
It was spectacular!
It was impressive!
What a beautiful mind!
Wouldn’t the kids be impressed and well informed???
Well……..
Again, I was speechless following my biggest revelation —–
I saw my handwriting. Yep! It’s mine alright. But, the subject matter seemed so distant and oh so foreign. Did I really learn ALL of this stuff?
I was bummed….
I was stupefied….
I was speechless….again.
Then, I remembered Mineralogy class. At this point in my life, I did not have a relationship with Jesus. I knew of Him, but, He was not my Lord and Savior. At this point, I believed in a high power that “set off” the Big Bang. Studying those minerals changed it all for me.
You see, all minerals fit into one of 6 crystal systems. These are 6 ORDERLY systems. Each mineral has a structure – an ORDERLY structure. Orderly, NOT random. Precise, NOT random. It occurred to me that this type of order could not come from chaos. AND, that there must be an INTELLIGENT CREATOR to facilitate it all.

Further more, if God cared enough to knit the very building blocks of Earth’s foundations then how much more care and order did He give to my body when He knit me together?
I wanted more than anything to explain to the co-op kids that God cares about the little things. No detail is too small or insignificant. Concentrating on Luke 19:40, “I tell you that if these should keep silent, the stones would immediately cry out.” I wanted them to see that the foundations of Earth shout praise of its Creator.
I would like to say that the mineral identification went off without a hitch. ……those are some very patient and understanding middle schoolers! After the ball started rolling, the kids caught the enthusiasm for God’s wonderful creation in its’ small form and I was treated to the spark of discovery and recognition of God’s creation and their desire to know more about it.
Sounds like a fair trade to me!

Great story! Wonderful that you were able to share the miracles with the children. I’m sure they won’t soon forget!
I’m impressed you knew where to get all of those books … LOL … great story!
Very interesting.
Love the part ” No detail is too
small or insignificant”. Thanks for sharing.
