If you are looking for a good book, please tune in as our goal is to review 52 books in 365 days. This week’s installment is a contemporary novel called, Hello, Sunshine.. The book jumped out at me because of the pretty cover (yes, I know totally not the way to pick a good book) and the premise. What happens when your life turns upside down?
So, What Is Hello, Sunshine about, I’m glad you asked…
Sunny wakes up on her 35th birthday and everything is great. She has a great husband, she just got signed to host a Food Network Show, she has a new cookbook, her cooking videos have gone viral. She has a beautiful home in New York, she has everything or it least it looks that way.
She wakes up to an odd e-mail and then her Twitter account gets hacked.
Can a tweet change your life? Well Sunny finds out very quickly as three series of tweets and a group of mystery e-mail message changes everything.
This contemporary novel asks the question of Sunny what really matters? She has to figure out what matters and what doesn’t and she finds out who is really there for her when her whole life falls apart. When all she has left is her estranged sister, Rain and her 6 year old niece, can she bounce back from this twist of fate that has exposed her secrets?
Sunshine failures, lies and shortfalls are all in full view. Can she comeback from this? What can she do to put her life back together and what about everything she has lost?
In 256 pages, Laura Dave takes us on a whirlwind ride as she explores the white lies we tell, life – reality vs. fiction, family dysfunction and how we deal with challenges especially when they hit us all at once.
What I Thought About The Book
The book moved quickly and it was entertaining from the beginning until the end. I got to the end wishing there was more, but I also appreciated the open ending (sorry no spoilers). This is a story that leaves you thinking about your own life. Hello, Sunshine dives into the complicated times that we live in where everything looks perfect on the outside, but never really is. It left you with some great questions to ponder and think through. Laura’s writing leaves you entertained and conflicted because you don’t know what to do with Sunshine. Clearly Sunshine has made some errors in judgement but what did she really deserve? Does her punishment fit the crime? At the end of the day, I really enjoyed Hello, Sunshine and Laura Dave’s reading. I flew through the 256 page book, I finished the book in a day literally and when I put it down I couldn’t wait to pick it up again. It makes a great summer read, even my daughter tried to get in on the action as I played it in my Kindle in the car, she was as captivated as I was. The book is due to be released on July 11th so preorder it now, it will make a great vacation or beach read and an awesome pick for a book club. Trust me when I say, the discussion will be rich.
