I remember a show called, “This is Your Life”. If you were the guest, the show would bring out people who along your life, you had impacted. There were people who knew you, and who had experiences with you. Everyone had their own story to tell about how that person made a difference in their lives. Often the person standing there had no idea that what they did made an impact at all. At the end of the show, the person left with a glimpse of how their life helped someone else, or at least made a difference. A real touching experience.
It is easy for life to LIVE us. There are demands every day that scream, take care of me, right now! So, we do! Then the important things we want to do that make life, memorable, fun, and beautiful disappear in a sea of todo’s, meetings, deadlines, and occasional rest. Over time, I have found that if we want to live great lives we have to choose them, and we have to make the decision daily. We have to walk away from some great opportunities to have some even greater ones in the future. You must decide what you want, and then you must go after it feverishly, and consistently.
Life is about our daily choices, they are like bricks and day after day they build a house that we live in for the rest of our lives. At 40, I have made many choices, some I wish I could change and some of them, I am incredibly happy that I made. Just like you, I can learn to make all of those choices a beautiful mosaic, and continue to build with some broken pieces, or I can lament over the “right now” outcome, and waste the rest of my time in a sea of wrong turns and regrets. I choose the former.
A life well lived is a great life, and it holds within it the joy, and ability to move forward and grow. Today, I encourage you to remember that this is the first day of the rest of your life. Live it richly and fully, celebrating ever nook and cranny of life as much as you can. Fight to live your dreams every day, even when they feel too big, and feel like they maybe impossible to accomplish. Think of your day on, “This Is Your Life”, what do you want them to say about you? Then decide to live each day so that you are able to hear exactly that!
