This post was written by me, but it was brought to you courtesy of our partners at SC Johnson, and Niche Parent Network.
It is Thanksgiving Eve, and I, like many of you have just begun my cooking.
There will be tons of you who will trade in a good nights rest to finish up those mouth watering dinners to serve to your families. Thankfully I don’t have to stay up all night, but I will start putting together my cookie baking plan, so I can give them as gifts to families and friends.
There are some people who really look forward to this time of year, but I am not one of them. To tell you the truth, Fall and Winter are my two least favorite seasons. If I lived in Hawaii where the temperatures are beautiful all year round fall and winter might be no big deal, but it’s cold where I live, and the idea of going outside and feeling the frigid air doesn’t give me much to look forward to, so I look for small ways to make these days a little easier to get through. I have found that fragrances and scents make me feel better about the season, and can often take me to a comforting place. Those familiar smells that remind me of the fun you can have around the holiday season take off the edge of the cool air. The right smell can quickly fill your mind with precious memories The smell of Christmas trees blowing in the wind, the smell of cinnamon, and the sweet smell of vanilla reminds me of baking and make the cold temperatures go away. Those scents gave me a sense of solace as I bundle up in my house and wait for the cold to go back into hiding. Those scents take me to a place where I remembered the first trip I took to New York City, with my dad. The big lights, the play, and those roasted nuts that filled the city streets. The trips we used to take down to South Street in Philadelphia on Christmas Eve all memories with smells that I still treasure. I can’t get those precious moments back, but the smell of warm baked cookies and vanilla filling my kitchen and living room are welcome reminders of those great memories. On those cold winter nights, those familiar smells give me peace and remind me of something I love family and cooking. I am going to take some time today to enjoy some peace and quiet. I am going to warm up some Glade Pure Vanilla Joy Wax Melts, and recreate the smells of my youth. With my feet up and my eyes closed, I am going to enjoy the scents that bring me back to a time I love.
As I start planning for the next couple of weeks. I’ve got my cookie recipes out and ready, and the new special Ziploc container on the counter waiting to be filled with cookies for my friends and family. Most of all I am going to make sure I don’t let these precious moments pass I am going to savor them and appreciate them knowing that they will come and go quickly, and I will ever get them back again.
