By now, maybe you heard the rumors. Is this movie the new “Love Jones” or is this movie a must see this holiday season? Well I am here to give you my two cents… I hope your ready. The Girlfriends with Goals team trekked out in the cold last Thursday to see it so we could share our opinion
I thought this movie was going to be good when I saw the preview. There was something about watching the chemistry between the characters, Noni, the star and Kaz, the officer that made me think this was going to haute.
Sierra was not as impressed, nor was she excited about going, but she went. So, would the movie make the cut, and live up to ALL the hype?
This movie is about a chance encounter that changed both Noni and Kas’s life. All the pressure of stardom is weighing on Noni, and there is something about it that just isn’t right. Can she continue to live in this bubble? Then there are two parents who want the best for their grown children, trying to help them go the “right way” so they can have the kind of lives they “think” they should have, but are they the kind of lives they want.
Yes, this is a love story, but it is so much more. Navigating life, growing and making decisions that work for you, while you attempt to follow your dreams can be complicated. That is part of this story.
The movie Beyond the Lights tells the story of a young woman who is chasing her dreams to become a musician. She’s been properly prepared, she has the sound, and the “look” so what could be wrong? Noni has a big problem, her life is full of expectations and pressure. The songbird voice has shielded her from some harsh realities, but it has also ushered her into problems she can no longer ignore and doesn’t know how to handle.
Nonie and Kas, crash into one another in an interesting way and so the story begins. The story takes us to some unexpected places, but it is full of beautiful music and thought provoking questions. It reminds us of the high cost of fame This these two people find themselves colliding with destiny, and dealing the unexpected.
Gina Prince-Bythewood, the director of the cult classic Love And Basketball gives us two more lovable characters to follow and fall in love with as they navigate their lives. We get to know them, and understand them, and we get to see how their history has shaped them.
This is a story that I think you are going to love. It is a story about ability, and getting to know yourself, and learning how to stand your ground. The characters teach us some great lessons in this beautiful love story, which leave you celebrating the characters Growth and freedom.
At the end of the story a full house left clapping and showing how much they love the story. Sierra, the sceptic who came with me had to admit the movie was excellent.
I highly recommend you check out this movie not just for the beautiful singing, but also for the beautiful story.
It took me a minute to realize that the beautiful Noni is played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who also played Belle in the film of the same name, which was released earlier this year.
Kaz, who is played by Nate Parker, who we have seen in movies like The Great Debaters, Red Tails, and Arbitage, also played an outstanding role.
Danny Glover and Minnie Driver, two seasoned actors also play excellent roles in this movie and give us so much to grapple with as parents who want the best for their children.
The movie comes out on Friday, November 14. Not only do you want to see the movie, you also want to experience the soundtrack. The songs are beautiful.
If you like great movie you want to be sure to add this one to your list and see it this Friday, when it’s released.
If you want to see another great movie please check out Belle, where Guba plays a magnificent role as Belle. A historical figure during a time when women had the US options, and where women of color were slaves. Every trail Della outstanding as well.
