I have to say that I never thought about, or had the forethought to ask Why We Call It Christmas or several other whys that this animated film answers. But, when I saw the title of this movie I got curious, which is why this movie appealed to me. I thought Why Do We Call It Christmas? would be a great conversation starter for us to have during this holiday season, but it was so much more.
Being familiar with Veggie Tales, I expected fun light hearted humor that was good for both kids and adults, and this didn’t disappoint, but it also did a fair amount of educating me and my family about things we thought we knew.
What I have wondered though, is how we lost the real meaning of Christmas, not just what it used to be, but what it was meant to be. Although this movie doesn’t answer that, I do think it they give us some clues of how to get it back.
This new movie by Phil Vischer, the creator of Veggie Tales answers several questions for us, in a way only he can. He does a great job of sharing ideas and concepts in a way that everyone can understand. His explanation of the gift of Jesus in the movie is priceless.
Phil introduces us to Buck Denver and his friends, who have questions just like many of us about Christmas. They are confused about the meaning of Christmas so they plan a party with friends who can help answer those questions for him and for us.
Our host Buck Denver, and his group of friends take us through a line of questions that we are looking for answers. As they come from their perspective homes, they teach us about Christmas while they make us think about sharing, helping others, and understanding the gift of Jesus and his birth to the world. They ask the kinds of questions you and I ask, what is the significance of the Christmas tree, where did Santa Clause come from and how did we begin to celebrate him and all he has done.
From puppet shows to fireside chats, we get the answers that we have been looking for..
With each one of Buck Denver’s friends adding a piece to the puzzle.
Together the characters teach us about grace, God and they even teach us a little about how we got off track when it comes to this Christmas business.
Along the way, we learn about the name, the significance of the Christmas tree, as well as how Santa Claus became such a big part of the day we celebrate and why? At the end of the day, we end up at Jesus and the importance of his birth for all of us.
I don’t think you can watch this Phil Vischer movie without asking yourself how you can do more to be more like Christ and how you can do more this Christmas season to celebrate Jesus’s birth and do more for others. This is a must see for you and your family. This is a movie we will watch over and over again, and one we will share with others during this Christmas season, and for many more seasons to come.
