The summer is the perfect time to catch a good read. Free time, vacations, time spent relaxing so, grabbing a good read just seems like the perfect thing to do.
I saw a few pictures of the cover when I went to #BookExpo that caught my eye so when I had the opportunity I picked it up, I did. The Identicals from New York Times Best Selling Author Elin Hilderbrand, sounded like an interesting pick.
What is it about?
Two twins find themselves split when their parent divorce. One twin goes with mom and the other goes with Dad. Before you start thinking about the movie the Parent Trap, I assure you it is not. Two girls Tabitha and her sister Hunter may look alike, but they have very different lives. A complicated mix of the issues and challenges that started when the two were young continue.
Set on the backdrop of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, Elin Hilderbrand takes you on a helicopter ride through both the beautiful island and this unexpected story of family, choices, and coming back together.
Harper, is the easy going twin is plagued by bad choices and Tabitha the mom of two raised by their successful helicopter mom seems completely different. A turn of events bring them front and center after being apart for several years. Harper’s choices have always been a problem for her twin sister and this reunion is no different.
Tabitha, the mother of two has dealt with the complications of life. Her daughter Ainsley, is a fiery teen who is out of control. The twins father, Billy is dealing with health concerns and Eleanor their mother the socialite clothing designer has always commanded attention and nothing about her has changed. The summer takes many twists and turns as the girls deal with people, history, their pasts and the ways that their lives were changed by their parents divorce. These small towns swell with vacationers during the summer months, but the locals never forget their complicated stories and they don’t let them forget either..
What I Thought About It
I’ve never been to Martha’s Vineyard or Nantucket so there was something about the way Elin wrote that made me feel like I was right there. Ainsley, Eleanor, Billy, Tabitha, and Harper have all made mistakes. Seeing how their lives unfold and how their stories intermingle is thought provoking and entertaining. I’m trying really hard not to leave any significant spoilers here.
At the end of the day, The Identicals, is a true page turner. The storyline moved quickly. I enjoyed walking through the summer on both Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket and hearing about the nuances that go with island life. Elin Hilderbrand, the author of 19 other books creates a refreshing and enjoyable summer read. Definitely worth taking the time to read.
