“Do You Remember My Name….______, I’m gonna live forever, I’,m going to learn how to fly HIGH, I feel it coming together, people will see me and Cry….
Remember, Remember, Remember, Remember… !!!”
“Well you want fame, well fame costs, and this is where you start paying in sweat!”
As a teenager, I remember watching FAME rooting for my favorite characters, enjoying Irene Cara’s singing, Leroy’s dancing, and Debbie Allen’s teaching and no nonsense attitude. I can still remember thinking wow this lady is not giving them a break, but now I understand why. When you want something you have to be willing to work hard, talent is great, but it takes more than talent to get where you want to go!
Fame was just a movie, but one thing about it is true every day of you life, you will find yourself in front of people or around people who have the ability to change your life. No, they may not be as obvious as Debbie Allen, but they may yield the same power. Are you prepared for that opportunity, and if you aren’t what are you waiting for?
A quote I love is –
“Luck is where preparation meets opportunity”
You may not know exactly when the doors may swing open for you, but you want to be prepared when they show up, you don’t want to be scrambling at the last minute without the right tools to walk through that door. You may know what you want out of life, but if you are even remotely interested in ever attaining it, where have you started paying in sweat? Those students spent hours practicing, they practiced in class, alone, and in teams, they knew what they wanted was costly, but worth it. Long hours, hard work, and great work ethic every day, all day. Their talent deserved action and so does yours!
So you may be asking what should I do to get ready?
1. Be prepared when your chance comes. When those characters came to the school most of them were prepared. They cultivated their talent, and they used whatever they had available to them to do it. Some had trainers, some had teachers, some just did a lot of practicing on their own. You need to understand what being prepared is going to take, and then you need to start doing it.
2. Know What Is Required. When people came to the school they knew what kind of opportunity going there would give them, they knew it was a step that would propel them to the top. Write a list of 5-7 things you need to grow, and start working on getting them. You never have to stay where you start!
3. Have A Team Who Will Push You. Debbie Allen’s character was serious she saw talent, and she pushed. She made them mad, but she also made them better. You need people in your lives who care enough about you to tell you that wasn’t your best, so go back to work and don’t comeback until you really have something to show me! That is how you move from average to great!
Do yourself the favor of being prepared for any door that opens up in front of you. The time is now, don’t let it pass you by, be ready when it comes!
What have you been putting off that you need to do now… if your big opportunity came are you ready? Whose on your push team?

I never watched the show Fame, but I do know when an opportunity shows itself, you better be prepared to know whether to accept it or decline it. There is usually only a very short window of opportunity.

I miss FAME. Someone tried to compare American Idol to it a few days ago and I must have had the funniest look on my face…

It’s definitely important to have people around you that motivate you and cheer you on. I need to lose about 20 pounds! Trying to count my calories on my own – but online support would probably help a lot!

I’ve never watched Fame (apart from the musical) I don’t think we had the TV show over here but it can definitely make such a difference having people cheering you on. x

Fame was one of the best weekly shows at the time, and for all the reasons you already mentioned. I loved it so much, I bought it last year when I saw a packaged Fame series for sale at Costco!

Having apathetic, or worse people who are downers, around you when you’re busy trying to get to your door (of opportunity) is so not pleasant.
I remember Fame! I loved that show, and that theme song. 🙂

When opportunity comes a knocking you better be ready! You also have to open your eyes and realize what is an opportunity and you have to be open to change.

I love that movie. This is an important reminder. I recently had a job opportunity come my way that I was (thankfully) prepared for and consequently, got the job. If I hadn’t been working all these years to develop skills and maintain my education, I wouldn’t have been a good candidate for this job that basically fell in my lap.

I loved the movie and the Fame show. It really did have great lessons in it. I miss those types of shows it seems so many are just “reality” shows that have no meaning. I remember watching and getting so emotional on some of the episodes they were so moving, of course I loved all the music and dancing too.

I used to watch the Fame show when I was younger and loved it. Really loved the singing. I’m so with you. When opportunity knocks you better be ready.
Melanie says
Oh I never pass up a chance for anything. If i’m presented with something I go for it. I would hate to regret it later. It doesn’t matter if you fail at it or aren’t good, the point is trying. I teach my kids this 🙂 Never watched the show though

Such good advice! And it keeps you from sitting around feeling sorry for yourself if you’re working to make yourself better.
Robyn says
Never watched the show. I agree that you better be ready when opportunity comes.

FAME is a really good movie! 🙂
I definitely agree – you need to be ready when the door of opportunity opens, as it is never open for long!

sometimes opportunity stares us in the face and we fail to truly recognize it for what it is
Healy Harpster says
No idea about FAME, have not seen it. It is really a great motivation if we have those friends and families that are there to support us to reach our goal. And, we should always get ready when opportunities come our way.

I’m on a never-say-no mood! Saying “yes” to various opportunities has led to more opportunities! xxx
