There are times when things just stand out to you. At the time, you may not even understand why, but there is just something in that moment that makes you stop and take notice. This was definitely one of those times.
Kelsey Grammer was on ‘Kelly & Ryan’ discussing this new movie, “Jesus Revolution” and I noticed that there was something different about him (something authentic and something well deep). As I watch him describe this movie and it became clear that this was more than a role for him (he was truly impacted by playing this role) and I wanted to know why.
I made a mental note that this was DEFINITELY a movie I wanted to see, but I didn’t hear anything else about it until last week.
I never heard of the Jesus Revolution before, I don”t even recall hearing the name Chuck Smith. I’ve heard of Greg Laurie, I’ve heard his messages, but how is it possible I never heard anything about this story. So here is what I thought of the movie after seeing it myself.
Here is the real deal…..So here is what I thought of the movie after seeing it myself.
Prepare yourself…..
Jesus Revolution is almost three hours long, but I assure you it was worth it. After about the first 10-15 minutes, I was captivated by the story and before I knew it the movie was over. There were so many twists and turns, my eyes didn’t turn away from the screen once and honestly, I am ready to watch the movie again. Not only was the story incredible, apparently a lot of it was true.
What it’s about… (Without too many spoilers, I promise)
Chuck Smith is a pastor and in his heart he wants to see this new generation saved, but he has no idea how to reach them. He feels out of touch and unable to relate to this new generation, how they think, what they believe in and how they act.
One day his daughter comes home with Lonnie, a traveling minister with his own flock, and her father has no idea what to do. At first, he thinks Lonnie is crazy, but after hearing him speak and seeing God work through him Chuck knows that this is a move of God.
Chuck is a pastor who knows that God is moving, but what do you do when the church isn’t ready for what God is doing?
Here come the “hippies”…
People are joining the church, they are excited and they are actually operating the way God’s church is actually supposed to be operating. The traditional church is hung up on other things that don’t really matter to God and Chuck has to figure out how to pastor in both world. Ouch…
During a time when people need God, He has sent people out to minister to this new generation. You can see their excitement for God. Young people are coming from this community and becoming leaders. Young people are on fire for God, building, ministering and supporting each other. Young leaders like Greg Laurie whose difficult lives are changing right before your eyes and you are watching them in awe of who and what they are becoming.
Hope is all over these kids and this movement grows and grows and even though challenges come, God is moving not only in this area but all around the country.
These people who were chasing after whatever they could find drugs, sex, and relationships only to find the living water that only Jesus can give, salvation.
Ok, no more spoilers you have to go see this movie for yourself……

This movie was POWERFUL. When I finished watching this movie, I had so many takeaways and so many questions, not for the character, but for myself. Seeing God move the way He was moving in the 70’s was exhilarating and exciting. Immediately, I thought about the revival that is happening now in Asbury. Could God be doing this again or honestly did He ever stop?
As you watch Jesus Revolution, I ask you to think about where you see yourself. Are you the young people who are looking for something, the older generation who doesn’t understand, or are you like Lonnie looking for a way to bring the two sides together?
This movie was great, it took me by surprise over and over again. I laughed, I was stunned, I cried, I felt like I had almost every emotion as I watched this movie. I loved the characters in this movie. We are all fallible and so were each of them. Despite that, I learned something from everyone of these characters. This movie is a tangible reminder that God loves each and every one of us, and He is always meeting us right where we are. I hope churches and especially the leaders of those churches will watch this movie; and ask are they working with God, are they ready to see how God is moving and are they willing to go after whatever God is showing them when they see it.
